Karimoku an introduction

Asking the question: “What makes the framework for a good life?”, the collections should not be considered a revolutionizing movement, but a subtle rebellion against the trend-driven. Guided by the body and mind, our intention is to evoke a spatial sense of serenity. In our dedication to the haptic qualities in spaces and furniture, we look to nature for inspiration; for that which is durable and timeless; for aesthetics that please and stimulate our senses—our vision, our touch. For aesthetics and materials that patinate and possess timeless beauty.

By using the unique skills and woodwork production capabilities of Karimoku, we encourage each architectural studio to use the best materials for the job, thereby maintaining the highest possible standard all around. Adding stone, glass and metal while avoiding plastics, composites, laminates and similar, the materials used should all reflect and be rooted in quality-minded focus.

We wish to introduce a brand that servers as a guardian for the natural and long lasting, using materials that has an inherent richness and gains beauty with age.

Due to the impressive production capabilities of Karimoku, we are able to produce furniture of this wished quality and to reach a price point which should be very compatible on the domestic market of Japan, but also internationally.

a title

The overall idea is to create a contemporary international design brand with architect-made furniture pieces from the world’s leading architects –created for specific architectural cases– as a place of birth for each furniture collection within the brand.

With a holistic approach to architecture, each architect creates a universe, manages all elements of the interior space, surfaces and objects. The idea is that designing furniture for a space will push the architect to consider specific needs and drive innovation, function and aesthetics.

The case for which each collection is made will thus become the first location for the launch of each collection, and the furniture pieces will be shown in their native settings before being spread out into the world.

Our approach to architecture and design is based entirely on the idea that spaces and furniture should, first and foremost, serve its user rather than be a means of artistic expression. Considering our work an ongoing study in human contentment and in creating wholesome, lasting environments, our human-centric design principles are rooted in an uncompromising commitment to accommodate people rather than have them be spectators.

“This chair was born of the exploration around Karimoku’s many factories, workshopping on sight with the craftsmen using existing parts and updating others, until a hybrid between the Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics emerged, resulting in classic chair with only the minimum of different parts in use, but with warm and welcoming feel to it”

Balance

Much like human well-being, the essence of our design philosophy is found in balance – between richness and restraint, between order and complexity. Each product is imbued with the same intrinsic quality: a simplicity that carries bigger ideas.

Guided by the body and mind rather than trends or technology, our products explore ideas that not only look good, but also feel good. Our architectural products that become thoughtful, minimal shapes that acquire softness and visual matter that assumes haptic qualities. Our work is sharp, crisp and exudes tactility with a focus on quality, details and durability

natural feeling

In times of rapid urbanization architects and designers all over the world work to reconnect man with nature. In both Scandinavia and Japan, there is a strong connection with nature, evident in the design traditions of both countries.

Large areas of both Scandinavia and Japan are heavily forested and experience long, dark winters, hence their affinity for wooden furniture and love of natural light in architecture.

Now, more than ever, we see a need for natural and haptic interiors connecting modern, urban dwellers with a sense of naturalness in big cities.
